In 1992, the founding members of the Saint John Senior’s Resource Centre (SJSRC) were volunteering at the 50+ Friendship Games. Linda Nickerson, one of the volunteers, helped organize the administrative part of the games, including registration, organizing tasks and people, and much more for the over 500 attendees and volunteers. In this role, she and her counterparts spoke to many different seniors, with one common theme emerging: Senior’s needed help accessing vital resources in their communities, staying active, and staying social. Upon that realization, the founding members applied for a grant, which allowed them to rent an office and buy office supplies. Over the years, they have created and became an outlet for many seniors and vital services. One notable service they offer is free tax assistance for seniors. As a channel for CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, they have helped hundreds of people file their taxes for free. However, unlike most organizations, the SRSRC offers tax assistance all year round. The service is available for seniors, during the months of March and April and for those in need all year long. As stated by Nickerson, these services “take away the fear” for many citizens. After all, “It’s scary to receive tax documents you do not understand,” said Nickerson, who has helped hundreds of people with their taxes. Over the years, the centre has started many programs and initiatives in the community of Saint John. Some programs and initiatives offering quick solutions while others requiring more long-term support. However, the main role of the centre is to provide services that can help seniors with their personal care so they can stay at home longer. Two remarkable services were the foot care clinic and the flu shot clinics. By partnering with organizations such as the Victorian Order of Nurses, the centre operated these services and others on a regular basis, depending on need in the community. These services have since been discontinued due to other services being put in place provincially. Beyond the needs such as healthcare and financial support, the centre values the importance of socialization. They host many different opportunities for people to get together. “If they meet together every week, they have lunch, they become a group. Like a little family.”- Linda Nickerson The centre is also a drop-in location for seniors who need technological assistance. People can come there to use a computer with internet access, which is vital for keeping up with their family far away or accessing information. They can also have documents scanned, faxed, or photocopied, often to file insurance claims. While people are waiting, they can even look through the centre’s library or bring in some donations. However, if a senior needs a specific resource, the centre has its pamphlet rack. Inside, they have information regarding varied services, including housing, finances, nutrition, and more. The centre also helps families find accessibility tools, including selling second-hand chair lifts and collecting alert bracelets or necklaces that are then redistributed into their community. In the future, the SJSRC hopes to offer even more activities at the centre, including different card games and bingo tournaments. Linda and her team at the SJSRC have been vital to this pilot project, Connection NB. Wanda Wilson, the community coordinator for the Saint John Region, is very thankful to them for all their help. “Linda, Jean, and Carol have been instrumental in the development of Connection NB, actively reviewing the program and volunteer training as it was being designed. With decades of experience on the front line dealing directly with seniors in our community, they understand the needs and challenges faced by older adults and are well connected with the services available in our region.” Thank you, SJSRC for continue to step up for the seniors in your community!
